After being selected seventh overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 1996 NBA Draft out of the University of Memphis, the 213cm, 102kg power forward was considered an underachiever in three seasons with the team that drafted him and was shipped to the Atlanta Hawks in 1999. He improved in his second year with the Hawks after lifting his points and rebounds per game averages from six and 4.1 to 12.4 and 7.5. Disgruntled after the Hawks won just 25 of 82 games, they traded him to his hometown Grizzlies prior to the start of the season in 2001.
